On-grid or grid-tie systems are by far the most commonly used system. These systems are connected to the grid and do not require battery storage. The energy generated is used to power up the load and the surplus generated is routed to the grid and sold to the electricity board. The system won’t provide backup power incase of power cuts.
The hybrid system is a cross between On-Grid and Off-Grid system. The system is connected to the grid and primarily uses solar energy to power up the load. Surplus energy is stored in batteries. When the primary source (solar) is unavailable and the battery pack is low or the demand is high, the system turns to Grid to power up the load. The system works smartly to reduce dependence on grid by prioritizing Solar and batteries to power up the load.
Off-grid systems are not connected to the grid. The system stores surplus energy in batteries which provide backup when the primary (solar) is not available or when the load demand is higher than the generation.
